HIV Education
The SLV AHEC has been providing HIV prevention services to the San Luis Valley (SLV) community since 1990 in collaboration with the Colorado AIDS Education and Training Center. Services have included: training of health care providers on HIV/AIDS since 1990; organizing an annual AIDS Candlelight Vigil since 1994 in collaboration with Adams State College; and providing HIV prevention education to the SLV community since 1990. The SLV AHEC was instrumental in starting the HIV/AIDS Coalition in 1994, a collaboration between community service agencies and people living with HIV.
The SLV AHEC and community members crafted one of the quilts displayed below in 1996 in honor of people from the San Luis Valley who lost their struggle with AIDS. This quilt piece, along with thousands of others is a part of the AIDS Memorial Quilt project, of the NAMES Project Foundation. This quilt piece was displayed at the National Mall in Washington D.C. Contact the foundation at www.aidsquilt.org for information on making a quilt piece to add to the project.
